Advanced oil spill trajectory modelling, environmental risk assessment and spill response planning for offshore drilling operations.
Client: Turkish Petroleum Offshore Technology Center (TP-OTC)
Location: Offshore Somalia – Indian Ocean
Year: 2026
Comprehensive oil spill modelling studies were conducted by our company for planned offshore exploration drilling activities in deep waters offshore Somalia.
The study evaluated potential spill behaviour, transport pathways, shoreline interaction and environmental exposure under multiple discharge scenarios and seasonal metocean conditions. Advanced numerical modelling tools including GNOME Oil Spill Trajectory Model and ADIOS2 Weathering Model were utilized to simulate oil transport, spreading, evaporation, dispersion and long-term fate processes over 30-day simulation periods.
The project incorporated detailed metocean assessments using CMEMS, ECMWF-ERA5, CFSR and NOAA datasets, including wind, wave and current climate analyses to accurately represent regional oceanographic conditions.
Multiple release scenarios covering low, medium and high discharge conditions as well as worst-case tanker spill events were analysed to support environmental risk assessment and emergency response planning.
Scope of Services:
- Oil spill trajectory modelling
- Seasonal spill behaviour analysis
- Oil weathering and fate assessment
- Shoreline interaction assessment
- Environmental sensitivity evaluation
